Stephen W. Samelson, M.D.

Born at Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Illinois, Dr. Stephen Samelson has made Central Alabama home throughout much of his medical career. He graduated magna cum laude from Auburn University before earning his medical degree from the UAB School of Medicine and completing his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Florida Health Science Center, Jacksonville.

After serving as an orthopaedic surgeon at Maxwell AFB, he joined SOS where he now leads as practice president. Additionally his medical leadership qualities have resulted in his selection as board chairman of USOP, SOS’s parent company which includes ten prestigious orthopaedic practices across the southeast.

Today, Dr. Samelson brings decades of experience to a broad general orthopedic practice. He evaluates and treats a wide range of injuries and musculoskeletal conditions. His knowledge, combined with access to SOS’s team of subspecialists, allows him to care for a variety of orthopedic needs and connect patients with specialized expertise when their condition requires it. His practice includes knee and shoulder conditions, arthritis, sports injuries, fractures, trauma, and hand and wrist conditions.

When surgery is needed, Dr. Samelson performs MAKO robotic-assisted total knee replacement, knee and shoulder arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, hand surgery, and fracture repair. He also has extensive experience caring for workers’ compensation patients with work-related orthopedic injuries.

Dr. Samelson remains connected to local athletics as a team orthopedic surgeon for Tallassee High School and Elmore County High School. He also values his connection to serving members of Montgomery’s military community.

Dr. Samelson and his wife, Suanne, have been married since 1988 and have three children, Joseph, Becca, and Kat. Outside of medicine, he enjoys gardening, movies, sporting events, design, and automobiles.

Dr. Samelson sees patients in Montgomery, Prattville, Wetumpka, and Tallassee, Alabama.
