Whether you’re playing pickleball, coaching your child’s baseball team, training for a marathon, or simply doing yard work, injuries happen. While many sports injury improve with rest, others need prompt medical attention. Knowing when to seek care can help you recover faster, prevent further damage, and get you back to the activities you enjoy.
At Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons, we’re here to help you make that decision with expert orthopedic care when you need it most.
What Is a Sports Injury?
A sports injury isn’t limited to organized athletics. It’s any injury to your muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, or bones that occurs during physical activity or repetitive movement.
Sports injuries can happen during a new workout routine, while playing with your dog, or even during everyday tasks around the house. Common injuries include ankle sprains, fractures, shoulder dislocations, ACL tears, rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow, muscle strains, tendon injuries, and cartilage damage. Early evaluation can often shorten recovery time and help prevent long-term complications.
No matter how your injury happened, knowing when to seek care can make all the difference in your recovery.
Which Sports Injuries Can Be Treated at Home?
Not every injury requires an immediate visit to a medical provider. Mild injuries often improve with rest and conservative care over the first few days.
You may be able to manage your injury at home if you have:
- Mild muscle soreness or strains
- Minor bruising
- Mild swelling
- Slight discomfort that improves with rest
- Full range of motion and the ability to bear weight comfortably
For many minor injuries, the RICE method can help during the first 24 to 48 hours:
- Rest: Avoid activities that increase pain.
- Ice: Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day.
- Compression: Use an elastic bandage to help reduce swelling.
- Elevation: Keep the injured area elevated above heart level whenever possible.
If your symptoms aren’t improving after a couple of days, it’s time to be evaluated by an orthopedic provider.
When Should I See an Orthopedic Specialist?
Some injuries need more than initial treatment to heal properly. If your symptoms continue or your injury is more complex, an orthopedic specialist can help you take the next step toward recovery.
You should schedule an appointment if you have:
- Pain that lasts longer than a few days
- Swelling that doesn’t improve
- A joint that feels unstable
- Repeated injuries to the same area
- Difficulty returning to work, sports, or everyday activities
- A suspected ligament, tendon, cartilage, or other complex injury
One of the advantages of choosing Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons is that your care doesn’t stop after your urgent visit. Urgent Ortho is part of our orthopedic practice, so if you need additional treatment, you’ll have seamless access to our team of board-certified orthopedic surgeons and specialists in sports medicine, joint replacement, hand and upper extremity, spine, foot and ankle, and more.

Whether your injury can be treated with therapy, injections, bracing, or surgery, our team will guide you to the right specialist and develop a personalized treatment plan to help you recover safely and get back to doing what you love.
When Should I Go to the Emergency Room?
Some injuries require emergency medical care rather than orthopedic urgent care.
Go to your nearest emergency room or call 911 immediately if you have:
- A bone protruding through the skin
- A severe deformity of a limb or joint
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Loss of consciousness
- A suspected neck or spinal injury
- A severe head injury or repeated vomiting after a concussion
- Loss of feeling or circulation in an injured limb
These injuries can be limb- or life-threatening and should be evaluated in the emergency room immediately.
When Should I See an Orthopedic Specialist?
Even if you’ve already been evaluated in urgent care or the emergency room, you may still need follow-up care with an orthopedic specialist.
- Pain lasts longer than a few days
- Swelling doesn’t improve
- Your joint feels unstable
- You’ve injured the same area multiple times
- You can’t return to your normal activities or sports
- You suspect a torn ligament, tendon, or cartilage injury
Orthopedic specialists have advanced training in diagnosing injuries involving the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They can identify problems that may not be obvious immediately after an injury and develop a personalized treatment plan to help you recover safely and return to the activities you love.
