Roland A. Hester, IV, M.D.

Dr. Roland Hester is a Montgomery native with longstanding ties to the community he serves. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Biology before attending Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. While at Vanderbilt, he was a Justin Potter Scholar, received the Kaufman Prize in Medicine, and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.

Dr. Hester completed both his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and continues to contribute to medical education as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Montgomery Campus, and as a preceptor for the UAB Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Hester is a general orthopedic surgeon who evaluates and treats a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions. His practice has a particular focus on knee, hip, and shoulder conditions, joint replacement, and hand surgery, allowing him to care for patients with both new injuries and ongoing orthopedic problems.

Knee and hip care are important parts of Dr. Hester’s practice. He evaluates patients with joint pain, including knee and hip pain, and provides both nonsurgical and surgical treatment based on the underlying condition. For patients who need joint replacement, Dr. Hester performs MAKO robotic-assisted total knee replacement and total hip replacement using a minimally invasive direct anterior approach. He also performs arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder.

His experience across general orthopedics, joint replacement, shoulder care, and hand surgery gives patients access to a physician who can evaluate and treat a variety of orthopedic needs.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hester has remained involved in physician education and orthopedic leadership. In addition to his teaching roles, he has served as President of Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons, Chief of Surgery at Baptist Medical Center South, a board member of Montgomery Surgical Center, and President of the Montgomery Surgical Society.

Dr. Hester’s connection to Montgomery extends well beyond medicine. He was named the 2009 Montgomery Man of the Year by the YMCA and an Outstanding Eagle Scout by the National Eagle Scout Society. He has also served as an elder and Sunday school teacher at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Hester is married to Lee Ann, and they have three children, Ann, Catherine, and Will. In his free time, he enjoys reading and outdoor activities.

Dr. Hester sees patients at Southern Orthopedic Surgeons in Montgomery, Wetumpka, and Prattville, Alabama.
