R. Lee Murphy Jr., M.D.
Dr. Murphy is a Montgomery native. He graduated from Furman University Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He then graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Medical School. Dr. Murphy completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Internship and Residency at the Greenville Hospital System/ University of South Carolina. In Greenville, Dr Murphy had the opportunity to train with famed Shoulder specialist Dr. Richard Hawkins. He then continued his education with Fellowships at the Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Jackson, MS and the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine in New Orleans. There he worked alongside internationally recognized shoulder specialists Drs Felix Savoie and Larry Field.
Even when Dr. Murphy is not practicing medicine in the office he is still helping to provide the community with medical assistance. He is a team physician for Auburn University at Montgomery, Faulkner University, Alabama State University, Montgomery Catholic High School, Lowndes Academy, Macon East Academy, Pike Road School System, and the Montgomery Biscuits Baseball Team. Dr. Murphy has also served as team physician for the Alabama Mississippi All-Star Basketball and Football games. Dr. Murphy is the Medical Director at Huntingdon College, an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham- Montgomery School of Medicine, and is a Master Instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He routinely lectures on sports medicine topics for the medical device industry and assists in the development of new products for both knee and shoulder surgery. He has been admitted to the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons medical society.
Dr. Murphy and his wife, Catie, have one son, Greer, and two daughters, Sullivan and Sawyer. In Dr. Murphy’s free time he enjoys spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, reading, and traveling. He also serves as a Board Member for the F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum.
Dr. Murphy has a special interest in shoulder and elbow disorders, ACL reconstruction, and shoulder replacement surgery.
