Michael E. Freeman, M.D. Dr. Mike Freeman grew up in Columbus, Georgia, but has called Montgomery home for almost thirty years. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Remaining in the state, he graduated from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Freeman completed an internship in Pensacola, Florida through the Pensacola Education Program associated with the University of Florida. Following his internship, Dr. Freeman served his country as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC. He was selected by the U. S. Air Force to return to a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Freeman was selected to study as an AO Trauma Fellow in Liestal, Switzerland and trained with Dr. John A. Feagin, recognized as a founder of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Freeman worked closely with Dr. Feagin in Jackson Hole, Wyoming as Dr. Feagin provided care for U. S. Ski teams and other Olympic athletes. Upon completing his residency, Dr. Freeman returned to active duty serving as Chief of Orthopedics at Maxwell AFB Regional Hospital in Montgomery, AL.

Upon completing his military service, Dr. Freeman entered private practice but remained in the Alabama Air National Guard for many years. Dr. Freeman maintains certification through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) in general orthopedics with a subspecialty certificate in sports medicine. ABOS defines the subspecialty certificate as board certified orthopedic surgeons that have, “demonstrated qualifications in sports medicine beyond those expected of other orthopaedic surgeons by virtue of additional training, a practice characterized by a volume of cases in sports medicine, or have made significant contributions to this field.”

Dr. Freeman’s particular areas of interest include sports related knee injuries and age-related disease processes including total knee replacement as well as injuries and age-related problems of the shoulder. Dr. Freeman has also had the honor of providing care to a large number of patients with acute hand injuries or age-related disease processes of the hand. Dr. Freeman continues to provide trauma care to central Alabama. Throughout his career in Montgomery, Dr. Freeman has volunteered his time and expertise to medical students and residents rotating with him in his practice.

Dr. Freeman serves as a long-standing team orthopedist for the Auburn University of Montgomery Warhawks, the Montgomery Biscuits AA baseball team, and Faulkner University. He is the proud owner of three Alabama High School Athletic Association Super 6 Class 6A football state championship rings from his time as team orthopedist for the Prattville High School Lions.

Dr. Freeman is married to Dr. Julie C. Freeman. She is an Assistant Professor at Auburn University Montgomery School of Nursing. They have two daughters. They have both been active members of the community. When Dr. Freeman is not providing care for the members of the Montgomery community, he enjoys traveling with his wife and family, inshore saltwater fishing, and flying airplanes as an Airline Transport Pilot and Commercial Seaplane pilot.
